“It’s been a wonderful series, a really hard-fought series from both teams and I hope West Indies get a lot of credit for the way they played,” said Australia skipper Michael Clarke, who claimed his second five-wicket haul in Tests with the devastating figures of 5-81.”I think it’s been great for test cricket.
“Our challenge has been to try and get better every day and to work really hard on our consistency. I think as a team we’ve done that.”
Australia had won the first Test in Barbados by three wickets while the second Test in Port of Spain was drawn due to rain.
Off-spinner Nathan Lyon supported well with 3-87.
West Indies skipper Darren Sammy produced a sparking vigil of 61, his highest score in Tests.
Resuming the innings at 173-5, West Indies lost Narsingh Deonarine (13) early in the morning, caught by Clarke off his own delivery.
Lyon then dragged the West Indies further into glooms by dismissing Carlton Baugh (12) and Kemar Roach (2) in his successive overs to leave hosts 234-8.
In the subsequent over Clarke dismissed Ravi Rampaul to put Australia just one wicket away from the wicket.
Sammy adopted do-or-die approach and hit frustrated the tourists with sparkling shots all over the ground. .
He shared a 49 with Shane Shillingford (31no) before Lyon got rid off the skipper to finally extinguish the home side’s fight.
Sammy said he was disappointed with the series loss but was positive about his team’s progress.
“I think the score, the result in this series didn’t reflect the way we played,” he said. “I think we did some good stuff throughout the series but playing against Australia, we always knew it was going to be tough.
“They won the key moments in the games and hence we lost 2-0. But I’m very proud of the guys, the way they have come out and played, that never-say-die attitude continues to show in our cricket.”
