He also alleged that some Indian cricketers are also involved in match-fixing.
Sonu Yougendra Jalan and Devendra Sripal Kothari alias Bhaiyyaji, were arrested from a flat by the Mumbai city crime branch on Thursday. During the raid the police seized Rs5.11 lakh in cash, two laptops, 22 mobile phones, 2 voice recorders along with other incriminating documents and gadgets.
According to the crime branch, the accused are the part of an international cricket betting syndicate.
The sources told that the betting network is controlled by a Pakistan-based gang controlled by Chhota Shakeel. Both Sonu Jalan and Kothari were found involved another case of gambling last year.
At that time Sonu was caught by Social Service branch from Andheri while Kothari was indiscernible.
“We had information that the gang was accepting bets on the IPL matches. Based on the information, we have arrested them. The gang is well-organised with having all the betting assessment software with them which helps them in managing their betting business” said Deven Bharti, additional commissioner of police.
All the bookies are presently on police remand till May 25.
The raid was conduced in the light of the spot-fixing controversy following which five IPL players were suspended on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) denied any knowledge of it’s player being accused of match fixing.
“No we are not aware of such an occurrence. If it had happened the BCCI would have informed us,” the SLC secretary, Nishantha Ranatunga. He promised that governing body would definitely investigate the matter if informed by the BCCI.
